2008 Beijing Olympic Medal Tally per Capita, per GDP
i like this way to calculate medal countI’ve been meaning to do something like this for over a week, but couldn’t be bothered/didn’t have time. But YES! Much more revealing/interesting/accurate/representative/cool.
i was just telling my wife last night that with as much money as the states & china spend on olympic training & marketing, they should win as much as they do. granted some sports get more money than others, but still the fact that so many athletes train full time (with a job at home depot on the side) is astonishing. as such, i think the smaller countries with tiny populations & economies who send a handful of medal-winning athletes are the more enviable stories: netherlands antilles, moldova, togo, mauritius.
in two years we’re going to get a giant map & learn geography according to the winter olympics: gdp, location, population, civil situation, history, etc. (i’m kind of a geography nerd.)
