And the belief that things will grow out of the activity itself and that you will — through work — bump into other possibilities and kick open other doors that you would never have dreamt of if you were just sitting around looking for a great ‘art ida.’ And the belief that process, in a sense, is liberating and that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel every day. Today, you know what you’ll do, you could be doing what you were doing yesterday, and tomorrow you are gonna do what you didid today, and at least for a certain period of time you can just work. If you hang in there, you will get somewhere.”

-
Chuck Close on Creativity, Work Ethic, and Problem-Solving vs. Problem-Creating | Brain Pickings

hilker:

Frankly, this applies to anyone who admits to holding “science” as their highest and guiding value, not just liberals. More broadly, the point that we generally ignore anything that conflicts with our beliefs, is true of humans in general.

This article is a typical right wing hit job, and its easy to make fun of it because it makes up facts. Sorry Hiker but you should trust more responsible news sources. I particularly like the bit where it claims that the Economist has somehow taken a stand against global warming.

Lets just break this down for a second: the article they are talking about (which they dont link or source to) is totally backing up the climate change evidence. I found this out by doing my own research, and finding the orignal article, which ends with: “Since CO₂ accumulates in the atmosphere, this could increase temperatures compared with pre-industrial levels by around 2°C even with a lower sensitivity and perhaps nearer to 4°C at the top end of the estimates. Despite all the work on sensitivity, no one really knows how the climate would react if temperatures rose by as much as 4°C. Hardly reassuring.”

Also, no actual scientific institute of repute is against global warming. None of them.

Sorry that your article “”on science”” clearly doesn’t understand how science works, and that its misrepresenting facts to suite its own aims.

Ok, I’ll bite.

The Economist article here which I think we both assume he’s quoting (it’s hard to say since neither of you linked to it) says exactly what Shikha says it says, not what you say he says it says: nowhere does it say the Economist has taken a stand. Furthermore, there are at least two other Economist pieces that also say temperatures haven’t done what the models predicted. In the face of such unpredictable environmental changes — which the Economist readily and repeatedly discusses — the author simply wants legislators to make informed decisions. Which is what scientists do.

The article wasn’t on science, either. It was about the liberal propensity to claim science as its highest value, while ignoring actual science in favor of dogma and predisposition (a propensity I applied to all humans, including myself).

You saw one tree and dismissed the entire grove, effectively proving the author’s point nicely.

“He started playing the piano at age four. At eight years old, Leon Fleisher made his public debut in music performing with the New York Philharmonic. The director called him “the pianistic find of the century” and soon he was accepted to study with some of the greatest teachers of his time.

His star continued to rise in his twenties as he signed an exclusive contract with Columbia Masterworks. Particularly acclaimed for his interpretations of Bach and Beethoven, in the classical music world, he was becoming known around the globe as the “next big thing.”

And then, when he was in his 30s, at the peak of his career, something happened. Over a brief period of time, he gradually lost the functional use of his right hand. It simply wouldn’t work. Doctor after doctor couldn’t diagnose the problem. Physical therapy didn’t help. Counseling wouldn’t bring it back. Medications failed to make a difference.

Predictably, he sank into a depression and wondered if all was lost. I don’t know this for sure, but I would imagine suicide could have been a real option. It appeared his career was over.

After a while, Leon began to slowing find his way through and found that he loved to compose music. Then he discovered his love for conducting, which he dived into as well. While still playing the piano, he developed proficiency playing with his left hand alone.

Soon, his world renown returned, this time for his beautiful and intricate left handed concerts. Take a look a Leon Fleischer performing in his seventies”

My favorite musical genius was born 63 years ago today as Steveland Hardaway Judkins (his last name was later changed to Morris) in Saginaw, Michigan. In this 1974 photo, he is performing his classic “Living For The City” on “Top Of The Pops” in London. Photo: David Warner Ellis/Redferns.
